The short answer: book a private airport transfer for around $35 to $60 USD, and you will be on the beach in El Sunzal in about 45 minutes to an hour. Everything else (shuttle vans, ride-hailing apps, chicken buses) is possible but adds friction most first-time visitors do not want after a long flight. Below is exactly how each option works, what it costs in 2026, and which one fits your trip.

The fastest, easiest option: a pre-booked private transfer

If this is your first time in El Salvador, book a transfer before you fly. It is what most guests at Casa Marea do, and it is the cleanest arrival you can engineer.

Here is how it works:

1. Reserve a driver in advance. Message your host (we arrange this for guests at Casa Marea directly through WhatsApp), or use an established operator like El Salvador Shuttle, La Ruta MO, or Vamos El Salvador. Give them your flight number, arrival time, and the address in Cerromar.
2. Meet them at arrivals. After you clear immigration and customs at SAL (Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero International, code SAL), your driver will be waiting outside the terminal with a sign. There is no walk to a parking garage, no queue.
3. Ride the CA-2 coastal highway. The route runs south from the airport, past the Comalapa toll, then west along the Pacific through Los Cóbanos junction, La Libertad, and into El Sunzal. Traffic is usually light. Expect 45 to 60 minutes.
4. Pay in cash (USD) or by Zelle. Most private drivers prefer cash. Tip is not mandatory but $3 to $5 is appreciated for help with bags.

Cost in 2026: $35 to $60 USD for a sedan holding up to 3 passengers with luggage. SUVs for larger groups run $70 to $90.

Why it wins: the driver knows the unmarked turnoff into Cerromar (Casa Marea does not sit on the main highway), speaks enough English to answer questions, and can stop for a SIM card or groceries on the way if you ask.

Shared shuttles run scheduled routes from the airport to La Libertad, El Tunco, El Sunzal, and El Zonte. You share a van with 6 to 12 other travelers.

• Trip time: 1.5 to 2 hours (multiple drop-offs)
• Book through: your hotel, Hostel Cumbres del Mar, or operators advertising at the airport arrivals hall

Good if you are traveling solo on a tight budget. Less good if you are two people (a private transfer costs roughly the same at that point) or you land late at night when shuttles stop running.

The flexible option: Uber or InDrive

Yes, ride-hailing works in El Salvador. Uber and InDrive both operate at SAL.

• Cost from SAL to El Sunzal: roughly $30 to $45 depending on surge and app
• Catch: drivers are not always willing to take the long coastal run, especially after dark. You may cancel two or three times before someone accepts. Cell signal at the airport pickup zone can also be spotty.

Route 138 runs from San Salvador to La Libertad; from there you catch Route 80 west toward El Sunzal and El Zonte. Total cost: under $2. Total time: 2.5 to 3.5 hours with transfers and luggage. It is genuinely fine during the day if you travel light and speak some Spanish, but it is not a first-night-with-suitcases plan.
