Where to stay in Surf City, El Salvador — how El Sunzal, El Tunco, and El Zonte compare, and how to choose a base for surf, quiet, or nightlife.

“Surf City” is El Salvador’s branded stretch of Pacific coast, and choosing where to stay within it makes a real difference to your trip. The three core areas — El Sunzal, El Tunco, and El Zonte — are close together but feel different. Here’s how to pick, written from our compound in Cerromar, just above El Sunzal.

The quick answer

  • Want surf-first access and quiet nights? Base near El Sunzal / Cerromar.
  • Want walkable restaurants and nightlife? Stay in El Tunco.
  • Want a slow, creative, coffee-by-the-sea pace? Choose El Zonte.

Because everything is within about 15 minutes by car, your base sets your daily default — but you can still visit all three. For the beaches themselves, see our best beaches in El Salvador.

El Sunzal / Cerromar — surf and calm

El Sunzal is the long, classic point break, and the hillside community of Cerromar sits just above it. This is where to stay if your trip revolves around the water and you value rest afterward: you’re minutes from the wave but away from late-night noise. Mornings are glassy and quiet; evenings are still. It’s the balance we built our place around.

El Tunco — the lively heart

El Tunco packs restaurants, bars, surf schools, and hostels into a small, walkable grid behind the beach. If you want to step out of your door into dinner and live music — and don’t mind some noise — this is the spot. It’s also the easiest base if you’re not renting a car, since so much is on foot. Trade-off: it’s the least quiet at night.

El Zonte — slow and creative

El Zonte is smaller and more relaxed, with specialty coffee, a friendly beginner-to-longboard wave, and a creative, international community (it’s the original “Bitcoin Beach”). Choose it for a mellow, unplugged stay. Trade-off: fewer dining options than El Tunco, and you’ll likely want a car.

What to look for in a stay

Whichever area you choose, a few things matter on this coast:

  • Real wi-fi if you’re working — look for fiber, not just “wi-fi available.”
  • A/C and a kitchen or kitchenette — heat is real, and cooking between beach meals is handy.
  • Secure parking and a safe, gated setup, especially if you rent a car.
  • Proximity to the wave you came for — five minutes vs. thirty changes how many dawn sessions you actually make.

Our stays in Cerromar

Casa Marea is a small, adults-only compound of four units just above El Sunzal — built for travelers who want the surf close and the nights quiet. All four share a pool, gazebo, secure parking, fiber wi-fi, and 24/7 private security:

  • Cresta — top-floor apartment with the best Pacific view; first pick for surfers.
  • Ceiba — a cooler apartment among the treetops; great for resting between sessions.
  • Cueva Studio 1 & Cueva Studio 2 — twin studios, ideal for couples or, booked together, a group of four.

Because we’re not in the middle of a party town, the trade-off is honest: you’ll likely want a car or transfers, and you’re a short drive — not a stumble — from El Tunco’s nightlife. In exchange you get dawn quiet and a real night’s sleep.
